What’s the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES)?

Starting October 12, 2025, the EU will launch its Entry/Exit System (EES) — a digital, automated border-control system for non-EU/Schengen travellers. Instead of passport stamps, you’ll scan your passport, take a photo, and give fingerprints at the border

Who it affects?

If you’re not from an EU or Schengen country:

Expect a one-time biometric registration on your first crossing (unless your passport changes or you don’t travel for 3 years)

After that, future entries/exits only take a passport scan and photo — no more stamping

If you’re an EU/Schengen citizen (or hold a qualifying residency permit), you’re exempt

Why it’s being rolled out

  • To replace slow, dated passport stamping with accurate, secure biometric tracking
  • To enforce the 90-day visa-free limit in 180 days automatically, stopping overstayers in their tracks
  • To beef up security and fight identity fraud and illegal entries

Timeline & rollout

  • Starts: October 12, 2025 at ports/airports/Eurostar/Eurotunnel in the UK and EU
  • Fully functional by: April 10, 2026 — phased in gradually across border crossings
  • Impact on travel time: Eurotunnel says it’ll add no more than 2 minutes to your crossing

What travellers need to know

  • Fingerprints and photo stored for three years
  • Travellers under 12, visa holders, or some permitting types are exempt from biometrics
  • If you skip travel for three consecutive years or update your passport, you’ll need to register again
  • Passport stamps disappear entirely by April 2026 for non-EU arrivals

Bottom line

If you’re heading to Europe from the UK (or any non-EU country) starting October 2025, don’t expect the old-fashioned flair of passport stamping. Instead, be ready to scan your documents, smile at a camera, and press your fingers flat on a scanner. It’s a one-off hassle that speeds things up later — and ensures EU officials can watch the clock on your 90-day stay without fear of error.
